The holidays can be a difficult time for many people. Despite our best intentions, sometimes life simply doesn’t go the way we plan. When bad things happen, it’s hard to be thankful to God. Where is He when times get hard?
Jen Barrick was a sweet, shy 15 year old girl. Daughter of Andy and Linda and sister of 11 year old Josh, and granddaughter of Dr. Ed Hindson, Jen desperately wanted to be bold and to be used by God to make a difference in eternity. On the night of November 5, 2006, the Barrick family went to church to hear Dr. Hindson preach and to watch Jen sing in the choir. They sang Jen’s favorite song, Lord You’re Holy.
Wonderful, glorious, holy and righteous,
Victorious, conqueror, triumphant and mighty,
Healer deliverer, shield and defense,
Strong tower and my best friend
After the service, the family picked up food and made their way back to their house where friends were waiting to have a little party. Then, about a mile from the house, the Barricks were hit by a drunk driver going 80mph. They were soon being rushed to four different hospitals. No one expected them to survive the night, but God had other plans.
They all suffered injuries; Andy and Linda were both in wheelchairs and Josh would have some scars, but Jen was by far in the worst condition. She had taken the crash head on and had suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma for months. Her family was praying for her, but the doctors weren’t optimistic. If she lived, she would have limited capacity for movement. It was highly unlikely that she would ever wake up.
But she did.
When Jen woke up, she couldn’t see and she couldn’t understand verbal commands and she couldn’t recognize her family or move her body easily, but she remembered every Bible verse she had ever learned and she knew how to pray. She would spend her days talking to God, praising Him for His goodness and for His work in her life.
Slowly, Jen began to heal, but she never took her eyes off of Jesus. Today, Jen still isn’t fully well. She needs Jesus every day and, if you ask her, she’ll tell you that He has never let her down.
Today, the Barrick family is thankful for the tragedy they were forced to walk through. Thousands of people have heard their story and Jen and her family travel around the country to share of the goodness of God. He is using their story to impact the lives of thousands and to show the world how to find hope and joy through any season of life.
