This past week, several European Union countries experienced yet another wave of violence. A mall in Munich, Germany was attacked by an eighteen year old man who authorities believe had been planning the attack for more than a year.
The young man opened fire in the mall, killing seven and injuring 35. Days later, Munich continues to be in a state of caution, with many remaining in their homes. Although the Munich police believe that the attack was not driven by ISIS, recent attacks in Nice and Paris have left much of the European Union on edge.
Germany has been in conflict for some time over the refugee crisis. When floods of refugees initially began to seek asylum in various European cities, German Chancellor Angela Merkel was quick to allow refugees into the country. However, as the numbers grew, German citizens became increasingly concerned at the number of refugees and the lack of proper vetting. Since the attacks on Paris in November are believed to have been carried out by ISIS masquerading as refugees, many in Europe wonder where the next attack will take place.
The attack on Munich came on the heels of an attempted military coup in Turkey that left many dead and the country very unstable. Although the coup eventually failed, many are unsure of what the future holds for the cosmopolitan country. Straddling the lines between the Middle East and Europe, many believe Turkey to be a key location for the world. Where Turkey goes, so will Europe.
As we see these events play out on a global stage, it can be easy to wonder, “What is going to happen next?” As believers we do not have to be afraid of what is to come, but it is good to be aware!
