According to a senior commander of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard, the nation of Iran recently constructed a new underground ballistic missile production factory and fully intends to keep developing its nuclear and ballistic missile program. The semi-official state news agency Fars recently quoted the head of the Republican Guard’s airspace division, Amirali Hajizadeh as saying “Iran’s third underground factory has been built by the Guards … We will continue to further develop our missile capabilities forcefully.” Without elaborating Hajizadeh added, “Along with improving our defense capabilities, we will continue our missile tests and missile production. The next missile to be produced is a surface-to-surface missile.” This comes as unwelcome news to many of Iran’s Sunni Muslim Gulf neighbors who are already wary of the power exerted by Iran. Likewise, the nation of Israel has expressed serious concern over Iran’s ballistic missile program, seeing it as a threat to regional security. The U.S. is also concerned with Iran’s ambitions towards developing its missile program.
Trump Puts Iran “on notice”
Since taking office in January, President Trump has imposed new sanctions on Iran in response to its recent missile launches, putting Tehran “on notice.” Iran has reacted defiantly. Newly re-elected pragmatist President Hassan Rouhani publicly stated, “Iran does not need the permission of the United States to conduct missile tests.” Hajizadeh added “It is natural that our enemies America and the Zionist regime (Israel) are angry with our missile program because they want Iran to be in a weak position.” Also of significant concern is that most nuclear-related sanctions on Iran were lifted last year after Tehran fulfilled commitments under a well publicized and disputed 2015 deal to scale back its nuclear program. President Trump has frequently criticized the Iranian nuclear deal as being too soft. Two months after implementation of the deal, the Iranian Republican Guard test-fired two ballistic missiles that it said were designed to be able to hit Israel and, as we reported to you at that time, Iran’s supreme leader the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, publicly vowed that the nation of Israel will not survive another 25 years!
Relevant Bible Prophecies
Unfortunately, this seems strikingly familiar to what the Bible predicted would occur as the last days approach. As we consider the growing missile program of Iran and their influence in the region with Islamic terrorists and the nation of Syria, one cannot help but be reminded of the Bible’s predictions concerning a gathering of world powers, aligned as enemies of Israel, in the last days (Joel 2:11; 3:2, 9, 14; Psalm 2:1-3; Zechariah 14:2-3). The Bible plainly teaches that when we can see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, we should know that desolation is near (Luke 21:20, 22). Indeed, it is not too great of a distance between Iran’s repeated threats, the increased Iranian production of missiles, and the “rumors of war” and nation rising against nation that Jesus warned of in Matthew 24:6-7. However, we must be careful to remember that Jesus Himself indicated that when we hear of such wars “the end is not yet” (Matthew 24:6). Thus, while the increase of Iran’s missile program, their efforts in developing nuclear weapons, and repeated antagonism toward Israel, may be a step in the direction toward fulfilling certain Bible prophecies, we cannot view such events as a fulfillment of prophecy in itself. While the potential is certainly very much in place for nations to rise up against Israel, that future event and the accompanying last days predicted by the Bible could be a month, a year, ten years, or even a hundred years from now. However, even while Jesus cautioned us that no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, (Matthew 24:36), I would be very surprised if we have much time left!
PRAY: Pray that the leaders of the world’s nations would recognize this latest effort by Iran at strengthening their military program as a threat to the security of the region and ultimately the world. Pray that Iran’s missile program fails to increase and that the Lord would protect Israel from any further threats by Iran and the terrorists it supports.
