In a dramatic series of recent events, Russia may very well be setting the stage for a political situation that could enable a major end time prophecy to be fulfilled during the Tribulation period. Russia has recently increased its military presence in Syria where it has launched a fierce bombing campaign against groups opposed to the Syrian regime. To complicate matters, there is also speculation of a ground assault involving Russian forces taking on an advisory role in directing Syrian troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and their Iranian counterparts who have recently joined the ground war in Syria. Thus, Russia – the most politically and militarily powerful of these three nations – has now entrenched themselves into a coalition of nations fighting to secure land that borders Israel. The Iranian hatred for the nation of Israel is well known with Iran’s repeated threats to wipe Israel off the map and the Iranian funding of terrorist groups such as Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, and Hamas. Likewise, the nation of Syria is also no friend of Israel. In the few decades of Israel’s existence, Syria has fought three major wars against Israel.
Therefore, it is not too difficult to imagine a scenario wherein, after the rapture of the church (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17) removes a significant number of people from the earth and doubtlessly creates international chaos, various nations such as Syria and Iran would have a greater freedom to attack Israel. Perhaps then, in an effort excused as protecting the vast number of Russian speaking people in Israel, a Russian political leader would be able to offer a peace treaty (or “covenant”) with Israel (Daniel 9:27). As noted above, Russia is the recognized leader, both militarily and politically, amongst the Russian-Iranian-Syrian coalition we can observe being formed. Therefore, Russia could easily persuade Syria and Iran to agree to a peace treaty with Israel at the start of the Tribulation period. This scenario is reminiscent of Daniel 9:27 that teaches the Antichrist will take power by diplomacy (which is why he has a bow without arrows in Revelation 6:2) and make a covenant for seven years to begin the Tribulation. After 3 ½ years; however, he will break this treaty in his quest for world domination. Interestingly, many argue that Russia’s Vladimir Putin continually shows signs of efforts to reestablish the Soviet Union and that Russia’s action in Syria are merely to prop-up the Syrian president Assad so that Russia can continue to militarize the region. Considering this, along with the hostile Arab neighbors of Israel, the threats of Iran and its ongoing nuclear developments, the stage is potentially being set for an alignment of nations that could facilitate the end time prophecy of a multinational peace treaty with Israel being fulfilled. – PNL
PRAY: Pray for God’s protection of Israel in the midst of her enemies. Pray also that America, as a nation, would continue to support Israel since, as we know, God will bless those who bless Israel and curse those who curse Israel (Genesis 12:3).
