What started out as Christmas party for employees of the San Bernardino public health department ended as a tragedy when an employee arrived with his partner and opened fire on the room. As of now, it has been reported that 14 people were killed and 17 wounded.
28 year old Syed Rizwan Farook had worked as in inspector with the San Bernardino county health department for five years. He and his partner, Tashfeen Malik, had a six month old daughter and had met online. Colleagues described him as quiet and polite, saying that he and his partner were “living the American dream.”
The attack seems to be premeditated, but Police are unsure of the reason for the incident. While it could be the result of a workplace dispute, authorities have not ruled it out as an act of terrorism. Malik has reportedly been a supporter of IS, but authorities do not believe the two things are related.
This was the deadliest U.S. gun attack since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in 2012. The New York Times has reported that incidents of mass shootings are occurring on average nearly every day, causing a new attitude of fear across America.
Thankfully, “God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity.” (2 Timothy 2:17) We can rest in knowing that God is unchanging and He is in control, no matter how things may appear.
Let us join together and pray for those affected by the events in San Bernardino. Pray that they will know the love and comfort of the Lord. Pray that they will come to know Him as their Savior. Pray that our nation would turn to the Lord in these times of fear.
