As evidence of our country’s continual spiritual decay, a group of self-professed witches is uniting to host a public ritual designed to cast a spell on the newly elected Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. So far, the event scheduled to take place in Brooklyn, NY has generated a large following on social media with over 10,000 “likes” on the popular Facebook platform where over 900 people have indicated they will be attending the event. The page dedicated to the event claims the ritual will be “embracing witchcraft's true roots as the magik (SIC) of the poor, the downtrodden and disenfranchised and it's (SIC) history as often the only weapon, the only means of exacting justice available to those of us who have been wronged by men just like him.” While Justice Kavanaugh will be the focal point of the ritual, others will also be targeted.
Trump and His Supporters Also Targets
Since launching a similar effort last year, over 13,000 self-professed witches have claimed they are regularly casting spells on President Donald Trump and his supporters. The exact nature of these incantations is unclear. However, the group supporting the efforts is also encouraging their members toward political action. "We can't do this alone: We need witches and progressive communities from all over the US to get involved.” The end of a set of instructions for a spell on the group’s website encourages their followers to vote in any upcoming elections.
Relevant Bible Passages
While this type of behavior is offensive and shocking it should not surprise us. The Bible clearly warns us that in the last days many “shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” (1 Timothy 4:1). Obviously, attempting to cast a spell on someone would qualify as giving heed to spirits and devils! Likewise, the attempt to conjure spirits and cast spells is very problematic as the Bible expressly condemns divination as a sin (Deuteronomy 18:9-12; 1 Samuel 15:23; Galatians 5:19-21; Colossians 2:8-10). Yet, as the last days approach we can expect to see an even more substantial increase in demonic activity. This increased demonic activity is what the Lord warned us about in Mark 13:22. With this type of demonic activity increasing, we need to remain in prayer.
