In another facet of a growing trend toward the fulfillment of the one-world currency prophesized in the pages of Scripture, Germany’s foreign minister Heiko Maas called for a new system of payments to be created that would be independent of the US and would allow Europe to be independent in its financial operations from Washington. Officials from Russia, Iran, and China quickly sounded their approval and intent to support such an effort that many see as a means of rescuing the nuclear deal between Iran and the west. Maas wrote in the German daily newspaper Handelsblatt, “Europe should not allow the US to act over our heads and at our expense. For that reason it’s essential that we strengthen European autonomy by establishing payment channels that are independent of the US, creating a European Monetary Fund and building up an independent SWIFT system.” Maas said it was vital for Europe to stick with the Iran deal. “Every day the agreement continues to exist is better than the highly explosive crisis that otherwise threatens the Middle East,” he said, with the unspoken message was even clearer: Europe no longer wants to be a vassal state to US monopoly over global payments, and will now aggressively pursue its own “SWIFT” network that is not subservient to Washington’s every whim.
Extremely Unsettling Contingencies
This move carries with it the extremely unsettling contingency that the system would make fully independent trade possible between Russia, China, and Iran. Under the guise of the European Union’s proposed SWIFT system this would provide an infrastructure for legal, secure sanctions-busting — and a guarantee that the transactions would not be reported to American regulators. More significantly, this proposal strikes a blow at the current worldwide economic and financial system which is held together by the U.S. dollar. In their efforts to provide an alternative, the stage is set for what could potentially be the ascendancy of other global reserve currencies that bypasses the U.S. dollar thereby eliminating Washington’s “veto powers” on global trade. This proposal is similar to the gold-based world currency that Russia and China proposed earlier this year. However, this system would be based on the fiat of the European Union thereby offering a greater legitimacy for that organization that many see as a fulfillment of the ten-nation confederation that will be led by the antichrist in the end times (Daniel 2:31-35, 40-45; 7:7-8, 19-24 ; Revelation 13:1-2; 17:3, 7, 12-16 ).
Relevant Bible Passages
While the Bible does not specifically use the expression “one-world-currency” there are more than enough details given in certain passages to conclude that the Bible does indeed teach that a one-world-government will be created in the end times during the reign of the Antichrist. In the Book of Revelation, the Apostle John has an apocalyptic vision of the Antichrist whom John refers to as the “beast,” rising out of the sea having seven heads and ten horns (Revelation 13:1). If we consider this vision alongside the similar vision of Daniel’s (Daniel 7:16-24), we can easily conclude that some type of world governmental system will be inaugurated by the beast, the most powerful “horn,” (ruler) who will defeat the other nine “horns” (rulers) and will begin to wage war against Christians. Importantly – when we consider events in the news that speak of major countries combining their economic resources – we are reminded that John goes on to explain that this future world leader will institute a system of exchange and currency (Revelation 13:16-17) that will facilitate the authority this end times leader will have over the entire population (Revelation 13:7). While it is difficult to imagine a single government having such authority, many Bible teachers and scholars have pointed out the number of parallels between such passages and the influence on the global economy that the efforts of the E.U., Russia, Iran, and China may have and its potential influence in the installation of a one-world-government. Thus, many speculate that through such influence, an as of yet unknown global currency could play a nefarious role during the end times. Let us pray these actions by Russia and China are not directed toward advancing this goal.
